(Presumably all of the Allinol-fuelled WGP racers who were blown up during the events of Cars 2 would have needed new engines too.) Notably in Cars 2 during the interrogation scene, the American spy Rod "Torque" Redline is unconcerned about replacing his engine block, and we also have the character of Sir Miles Axlerod who makes the claim to have replaced his internal combustion engine and driveline to be converted into an electric car. We see many instances of cars changing out minor mechanical components (particularly Lightning's working lights and many wheels) and it seems the engine would be no different. Could McQueen change his engine and still be McQueen?Īnd per this question and answer: yes. But first, to address your supplementary question. However, I think it's possible to draw together a few reasons to also make a satisfactory in-universe explanation. In conclusion, why can't McQueen just get an upgrade?īecause it wouldn't change the fact that McQueen, as an athlete, is getting older.Īs far as I know, the notion of McQueen getting mechanical upgrades to keep pace with the new racers isn't directly addressed in the film, so the flippant answer (as already commented) is "because plot". Or how Mater's hood is missing, and he doesn't hurt(physically) at all.

Obviously, cars can have parts removed or modified, like Cruz Ramirez's muffler removal in Cars 3, where she felt no pain from the change. Would a new engine mean a new Lightning, as in a new stock car fresh off the assembly line?

This leads me to another question, could Lightning's engine actually be swapped? As shown in the Cars 1 deleted scene "Community Service", Lightnings engine was moved from his stock car body to a steamroller's body, and yet his consciousness was transferred to the new body. This is highly possible for Lightning to be upgraded, as Dusty from Planes was ALSO tuned up, and Cars and Planes take place in the same universe(I'm ignoring the whole "all Pixar movies are related" theory for simplicity.) I'm aware that he's a stock car, but it seems Jackson Storm and the other high-tech racers break the rules anyway.

This raises the question, why doesn't McQueen just get an upgrade to his engine, suspension, ETC? He could easily get upgraded, and then be able to race like new again. In Cars 3, Jackson Storm clearly has much more raw horsepower(~800 HP instead of Lightning's 650 HP), a more efficient body and suspension, and just better all-around in terms of upfront stats.
